These are signs that the problem is not in the fixture itself but deeper in the drain line:
Most Sydney homeowners wait too long. A slow sink becomes a blocked sink becomes a backed-up laundry, becomes sewage on the bathroom floor. A sign that a single early call to a licensed plumber prevents entirely. Here's exactly how to read the signs and when to act.
Before calling anyone, run through these two steps:
Use a plunger properly. A standard cup plunger on a sink, or a flange plunger on a toilet, creates suction to dislodge a shallow blockage in the fixture's P-trap or outlet. Use firm, rhythmic pumps about 8 to 10 times, then check if the fixture drains. If it clears, run the tap or flush once more to confirm.
Check every other fixture in the house. Run the nearest bathroom sink and shower for 30 seconds while the toilet is having trouble. If they drain normally, the blockage is likely isolated to that fixture. If any other drain is also slow, gurgling, or backing up, stop using water throughout the house and call a plumber immediately.
One plunging attempt is a test. Two is a result. If the fixture still won't drain after two proper attempts, the blockage is either too far down the drain line for a plunger to reach, or the cause is a collapsed pipe section, heavy root intrusion, or accumulated scale inside the pipe wall.
An overflowing toilet is an emergency. If water rises after flushing and approaches or reaches the rim:
Water at toilet rim level contains sewage. Any overflow is a health hazard requiring immediate professional attention.
Your toilet, sink, shower, and laundry tub all connect to a single drain line running to the sewer main. A blockage in that shared line affects every fixture above it. When multiple drains are slow or backing up at the same time, the problem is in the main drain line.
Common patterns that indicate a main line blockage:
If the same drain has been professionally cleared more than once in 12 months, there is almost certainly a root intrusion, a collapsed section, or a joint failure that clearing alone won't permanently resolve. The underlying cause needs to be diagnosed and fixed by a professional plumber.
You should not smell sewage, sewer gas, or persistent unpleasant odours from fixtures when they're not in use. Odour from a drain suggests:
The first three need professional investigation. The fourth needs a CCTV inspection, and likely a pipe reline.
These chemical products are formulated for grease and hair blockages in the immediate trap area. They have two significant limitations:
They don't reach far enough. Chemical drain cleaners primarily act on blockages within the P-trap and the first metre or so of the drain. A blockage 5 or 10 metres downstream in the main drain line is completely unaffected.
They damage pipes with repeated use. If a sink that was chemically treated twice is still slow, call a plumber. The blockage is beyond what the product can reach.
Water pooling around the toilet base, when there's been no overflow from the bowl, usually means either a failed wax seal between the toilet pan and floor drain, or a cracked drain connection beneath the floor. These need same-day professional attention.
A drain that is partially compromised by age or existing root intrusion can block completely after a significant rain event. If drains that were fine before a storm are now slow or blocked, it's worth a professional assessment rather than assuming the problem will resolve on its own.
When Sydney Drain Surgeons attends a blocked toilet or sink call, the process is always diagnostic first:
Initial assessment. Our plumber checks whether multiple fixtures are affected.
CCTV drain camera inspection. For anything beyond a straightforward fixture blockage, camera inspection is the only way to know with certainty what's causing the problem.
High-pressure hydro-jetting. Once the blockage is identified, high-pressure jetting or mechanical tools remove debris, grease, or tree roots from the drain.
Pipe assessment and repair recommendation. After clearing the blockage, the technician inspects the pipe condition to check for damage or future risks, explains the problem, and provides solutions tailored to what the pipe actually needs.
Pipe relining if required. If the camera reveals a cracked, root-affected, or deteriorated pipe, pipe relining repairs it from the inside, no digging, with a 35-year warranty.
If sewage or water is actively overflowing from a toilet or backing up through floor drains:
Sydney Drain Surgeons attends blocked toilet and sink calls across all of Sydney, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including right now if you need us. We diagnose with a camera before we recommend anything, and we quote a fixed price before we touch a pipe.
Stop managing it. Fix it. Book a licensed plumber right away.
